Evening with an Entrepreneur: Taner Halicioglu
This one-on-one interview with UC San Diego computer science and engineering alumnus Taner Halicioglu is part of the campus Evening with an Entrepreneur series focused on "Inside Innovation". Preceding the interview will be a networking event and Startup Showcase for some of the companies emerging in campus incubators along with the faculty and student entrepreneurs who started them. The Startup Showcase begins at 5pm, then at 6:15pm UC San Diego associate vice chancellor for Innovation and Commercialization Paul Roben will welcome attendees, and Director of Program Design Greg Horowitt will introduce the main event in which philanthropist, angel investor and CSE alumnus and lecturer Taner Halicioglu will be interviewed by Allison Long Pettine, president of Crescent Ridge Partners, a venture fund that provides seed captial to early-stage startups. The focus of the discussion will be on fueling innovation for a robust economy, and Halicioglu's own approach to entrepreneurship and background, which included being one of Facebook's first 20 employees, after he worked at eBay and other high-tech companies.
TANER HALICIOGLU earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from UC San Diego in 1996. He went on to work for such companies as Cisco Systems, Loudcloud and eBay before he landed at Facebook in October 2004, less than a year after the company was founded. Halicioglu was among Facebook’s first 20 employees. As a software engineer and operations officer, he developed the hardware infrastructure that enabled the social network’s explosive growth. The company now has about 1.5 billion active users worldwide.
Halicioglu left Facebook in 2009 and served as a reliability engineer at Blizzard before returning to UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering in 2013 as a lecturer in the CSE department that had more than doubled in enrollment in less than five years. In 2015 Halicioglu donated $2 million to the department to help CSE expand its programs and the department's building to accommodate the rapid growth in students. The donation was one of multiple gifts from Halicioglu to CSE over the years.
Interviewer ALLISON LONG PETTINE is President of Crescent Ridge Partners, a venture fund that provides seed capital to early stage startups. She actively invests in entrepreneurs developing disruptive technologies across all multiple to build successful and sustainable companies. Prior to founding Crescent Ridge Partners, Allison was Vice President at Viscogliosi Brothers, a New-York based venture capital company focused on cutting-edge orthopedic medical device technologies. She was previously part of the founding team and Director of Corporate Finance and Strategic Planning at Paradigm Spine, a startup that developed non-fusion spinal implants to treat degenerative and deformity spinal disorders. Allison holds a BA in Management Science and a BS in Psychology from UC San Diego and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.
