DESCRIPTION/ABSTRACT: An Ecology of Mind is a video installation documenting the embodied experiences of 32 people as they sit enveloped in the surface of the earth with only their heads aboveground. Taking literally Heidegger’s concept of Being-in-the-World, the piece explores the reciprocal process by which the mind creates the world and the world creates the mind, particularly in viewing a subject as essentially fixed or embedded in their immediate environment. Although each participant experiences the hole individually, the compiled installation reveals a planetary network of minds that are segmented into a grid superimposed by the video wall in the Vroom. SPEAKER BIO: Alexandra Neuman is a visual artist working in film, video and performance. Drawing on elements from posthumanism, cognitive science and systems theory, she is currently focusing on the ways in which digital technologies both inform and complicate questions regarding the nature of self and the extension of thought beyond the individual brain and body. She received a B.F.A. in Visual Arts and Anthropology from the Sam Fox School of Art and Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis and is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in Visual Arts at UC San Diego. Neuman is a recent Webby Award Honoree for Best Writing in Film (2019), and recipient of the Best Screenplay Award at the Brooklyn Women’s Film Festival (2018).
