ABSTRACT: This is a combined event to showcase the student projects completed in two courses taught by Visual Arts faculty members Ricardo Dominguez and Brett Stalbaum, featuring large-format Ultra-HD videos and 3D virtual environments. On Friday, December 19, the Qualcomm Institute (QI) will host end-of-quarter public displays of undergraduate arts-related projects from two separate courses: Visual Arts 40, an introduction to the conceptual uses and historical precedents for the use of computers in art taught by professor Brett Stalbaum; and Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts (ICAM) 120, a course on virtual environments taught by Visual Arts professor Ricardo Dominguez. Under the title "Some Billions of Pixels," Professor Stalbaum will introduce three films developed by student teams from VIS 40. The large-format films will be shown in Ultra-High Definition, popularly known as "4K" because each frame is roughly 4,000 pixels across -- making it four times the resolution of regular HD. The films will be shown on the 4K projector in Atkinson Hall's Calit2 Auditorium from 7pm through 9pm. Also from 7-9pm in Atkinson Hall, Professor Dominguez will be in QI's Immersive Visualization Laboratory, where the 15 students in his Fall ICAM 120 class will showcase three 3D projects inside the StarCAVE virtual-reality (VR) environment. Their final projects for the course take the form of VR programs. The full title of the course is "From Cave to Cave: Virtual and Immersive Environments." The ICAM class investigated the deep history of virtual/immersive environments from the paleoart of the Lascaux Cave in France, to the histories of immersive theater, art, film, net art, video games and today's virtual/immersive CAVE environments such as QI's StarCAVE. Teams of students produced three different CAVE "gestures" that will be displayed in 3D on the StarCAVE environment, with support from QI gallery coordinator Trish Stone. Friends and family are invited to the Dec. 19 event, which is also open to the broader campus arts and research communities.
