President Binglin Gu of Tsinghua University spent the day meeting with UC San Diego researchers and administrators. He was accompanied by Yi Zhang, Director of Tsinghua's International Office, and Shuangnan Zhang, a professor of physics at what is sometimes referred to as the "MIT of China."
The visit included a signing ceremony on a Letter of Intent to bring Chinese students and researchers to San Diego. The document also opens the way for return exchanges to Tsinghua, China's premier science and technology university, located in Beijing.
The visit was arranged by Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, Peter Cowhey, and involved Vice Chancellor of Research Art Ellis as well as Dean Frieder Seible of the Jacobs School of Engineering, and Dean Mark Thiemens of the Division of Physical Sciences.
The Chinese delegation started the day at Calit2, with a guided tour of the institute's visualization facilities and electronics labs, including a demo of the StrokeDoc telemedicine project. They also discussed possible areas of collaboration with Calit2 researchers Arnold Cao and Ping Zhou, as well as Manager of Government Relations Jerry Sheehan and Manager of International Partnerships Srinivas Sukumar.
Also at Calit2, President Gu -- himself a physicist who received his Ph.D. from Denmark's Aarhus University in 1982 -- met with senior faculty from UCSD's physics department, including Professor Frank Shu.
After the lunchtime signing ceremony, the officials from Tsinghua University met with key members of the Jacobs School's Department of Bioengineering - Shu Chien and Robert Sah. They ended the day at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, where they discussed international affairs with Barry Naughton, professor of Chinese economy at UCSD, and with Tai Ming Cheung, academic coordinator at the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.
The only other campus destination for the Tsinghua delegation on this visit to the U.S. was Caltech, where they will attend the June 8 inauguration of its president, Jean-Lou Chameau.
