UCI Professor Receives NSF CAREER Award
2.3.05 -- Payam Heydari, UCI assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and a Calit2 academic participant, has been recognized by the National Science Foundation with one of its most prestigious awards.

Heydari was named a recipient of the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award for his research on “Analysis and Design of Silicon-Based Performance-Optimized Integrated Circuits for High-Frequency Wideband Wireless Communication Systems.” The CAREER award is NSF’s most prestigious commendation for new faculty members and recognizes the early career development activities of scholars most likely to become the academic leaders of the 21st century. CAREER awardees are chosen on the basis of creative, career-development plans that integrate research and education.
Heydari is working to design novel silicon-based integrated circuits for use in high-performance wideband wireless communication systems. These next-generation high data-rate wireless systems will benefit law enforcement, rescue operations and personal area networks.

After receiving his doctorate in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California, Heydari joined the UCI faculty. He is the recipient of the 2000 Best Paper Award from the IEEE International Conference on Computer Design and has received the Technical Excellence Award and the Best Iranian Graduate Student Award in the area of electrical engineering from the Association of Professors and Scholars of Iranian Heritage in California in 2001. He was also named a 2004 EECS Department Outstanding Faculty member.
The CAREER award carries with it a $400,000 stipend.
