Call for Broadcom Fellowship Application
Irvine, Aug 16, 2016 -- The inaugural Calit2@UCI Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program sponsored by Broadcom Foundation is accepting research proposals for fellowship consideration. This opportunity is for UC Irvine Ph.D. students in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering who are interested in and have the academic ability to conduct research pertaining to edge devices for Internet of Things (IoT) and smart devices. The two-year Broadcom Foundation Fellowship will annually support 10 UCI engineering graduate students working in sensors/actuators/controllers, electromagnetic components, 3-D packaging technology and related areas.
Ten fellowships will be awarded this year. Fellowships are for one academic year (Fall 2016- Spring 2017) with stipend support of $2,500/month for 9 months plus $1,000 for travel expenses for Fellows presenting papers at research conferences. Students interested in the Broadcom Fellowship Program should contact Jacqueline W. Myers atjwmyers@calit2.uci.edu and submit application package to Brittany Gray (grayb@uci.edu). The application deadline is September 15, 2016; awardees will receive notification on September 30, 2016.

The Broadcom Foundation, established in 2009 to advance science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, launched the fellowship program with a $1 million gift to be split between UCI and UCLA, both of whom have engineering schools named for Broadcom founder Henry Samueli. In support of these two schools, and to foster scholarship, collaboration and innovation among graduate students, the Broadcom Foundation supports a joint research initiative in IoT edge devices and smart devices.

Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a Ph.D. student who has passed preliminary exam in his or her home department or program within the Samueli School at UCI.
- Students should be supervised by a faculty member within his or her home department.
- The Broadcom Foundation Fellows are required to participate in a joint symposium with UCLA Fellows in Spring 2017, which will allow Fellows to share research accomplishments and interact with their peers and engineering leaders.
Fellowship Application package submitted by Sept. 15, 2016 must include:
- A research proposal (limited to 3 pages), which will be evaluated for innovation, creativity and technical merit. Students accepted as Fellows will be funded for one year, and after the first year, may apply for second-year funding.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- Bio sketch and academic record, including transcript.
