Regional Symposium
On Thursday, Nov. 29 2001, Calit² director Larry Smarr is one of four speakers scheduled to make presentations at a National Academy of Sciences regional symposium for Southern California. It will take place from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Price Center Theater on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. The symposium will feature talks by distinguished researchers in the earth, biomedical, and computer sciences. The NAS extends a special welcome to students and postdoctoral fellows. Ron Graham, Calit²'s chief scientist and professor of computer and information science at UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering, is co-organizing the event, together with Edward Holmes, vice chancellor for health sciences and Dean of UCSD's School of Medicine, and Charles Kennel, Director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Calit² director Larry Smarr will talk on "Empowering Scientific Research with the 21st Century Internet." Smarr says that very different scientific disciplines require very similar networking, data storage, visualization, and computing infrastructure: "This new underlying infrastructure-equipped with wireless sensornets, collaboration and visualization technologies, and the development of powerful photonic networks-will allow science to be pursued that was not possible before."
Preceding Smarr at the podium will be:
- V. Ramanathan, speaking about "The Asian Brown Cloud." The Professor of Atmospheric and Climate Sciences at UCSD's Scripps Institution of Oceanography will talk about the Indian Ocean Experiment observations of the winter season brownish haze that spreads over most of the North Indian Ocean, South and East Asia, which has revealed new insights into how this phenomenon is regulating the climate system.
- Jeremy Jackson, Professor of Oceanography at the Scripps Institution, who will speak about "Unnatural Oceans;" and
- Webster Cavenee, who will discuss "Exploiting Mutations in Tumors for Targeted Therapy." Cavenee is a professor of medicine at UCSD and director of the San Diego branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research.
