UCSD Division Hosts Ericsson Research Review
|
3.31.04 - UCSD hosted an ambitious Ericsson research review on future-generation wireless systems March 30-31.
“This two-day event,” says Ramesh Rao, UCSD Division director and professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, “provided an excellent opportunity for researchers from Ericsson and Calit² to discuss progress on sponsored research funded by Ericsson. Faculty researchers also had the opportunity to describe emerging activities and demonstrate technologies that may be ready for commercialization. The meeting covered a remarkable number and range of projects, and the dinner was standing-room-only!”
Day 1 was devoted to nearly 25 non-stop presentations by UCSD faculty, postdocs, and graduate students on adaptive systems (led by UCSD Division director Ramesh Rao), CDMA systems (Larry Milstein), linear power amplifiers (Larry Larson), and multi-antenna wireless communications systems (Basker Rao).
The day was capped by a poster session featuring 25 student posters and 12 demos, including (as already documented on this Web site) the Always Best Connected project, the San Diego Wireless Traffic Report, the ActiveCampus project, and wireless assistive technologies. Demos of newer projects included Cal-Radio; communication protocols for efficient battery utilization; BREW-based, location-based service framework; and the convergence of wired and wireless networks. The demos also included three related to emergency response: a mobile command-and-control center for crisis mitigation, Cal-GIS audio-cues guidance system for first responders, and navitron-go sense-of-touch guidance system for first responders.
One of the key visitors at this event was Mats Granryd, vice president and general manager of the Ericsson CDMA Business Unit. He was escorted through the poster/demo session by Larry Smarr, Ramesh Rao, and Frieder Seible, dean of the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering.
Day 2 was devoted to UCSD’s perspective on new ideas in wireless communications and presentations by Ericsson personnel on future network architectures, radio technologies beyond 3G, trends in terminal receiver algorithms, and cooperative relaying and radio-friendly, multihop networking.
The meeting closed with presentations on new research initiatives at UCSD, including the Embedded Systems Center (led by Rajesh Gupta), the Center for Networked Systems (Andrew Chien), and recent developments in the Center for Wireless Communications (Larry Larson).
Some 45 people – UCSD faculty, postdocs, and students alongside Ericsson engineers and other company representatives – participated in the meeting. The meeting was videotaped, portions of which should become available shortly on this Web site.
