Monster Supply Air Handlers Hoisted to Roof of UCSD Building

4.21.04 – Tim Beach, UCSD facilities manager, was on hand Saturday morning last weekend to photograph the spectacle: It took seven hours and a 100-ton crane to hoist two supply air handlers, made by Temptrol, to the top of the Calit² building. Each one is 20 feet wide by 14 feet tall by 30 feet long. They were delivered to the roof in four sections each, then assembled at the top.
These units mix air in the building with fresh air from the outside and regulate air temperature. The campus standard temperature is 74 degrees. If it’s hot inside, say 78 degrees, but cooler outside, say 68 degrees, the return air dampers close and the outside dampers open to bring in the cooler air. The digitally controlled systems, made by Johnson Controls, take approximately 30 minutes to completely change out the air for the entire building of 220,000 square feet.
“I monitored progress of this activity via the Webcam on our building from home,” says Beach, “which helped me know when to come to campus for the best photographs.”
