UCSD Faculty and Students Invited to Experiment with Wireless Technology
Qualcomm has provided access terminals (called hornets) to interested users at UCSD to experiment with 1xEV-DO technology, which provides wireless access to the Internet. The hornets are Palm Pilot-sized devices that plug into an Ethernet or USB port and provide connectivity wherever there is 1xEV-DO coverage. From the antennas installed on EBU1, we enjoy a coverage of about a six-mile radius with bandwidth up to 2.4 megabit in ideal conditions.
We are now encouraging research projects using this technology. If you are interested, please provide a short summary of the proposed effort, any required equipment, and the timeframe for the research. Please also describe the computer hardware and operating system you will be using. These mini-proposals need only be a few paragraphs up to a page. We anticipate requests will require equipment for a longer duration, for example a quarter or even two in some cases, than was possible during our earlier "user trial."
Proposals are due March 1. Please send them, and any related questions, to Greg Hidley, ghidley@ucsd.edu.
This project is managed jointly by Administrative Computing and Telecommunications, Calit², Academic Computing Services Network Operations, and the Jacobs School of Engineering in conjunction with the UCSD campus-wide wireless technologies task force, which is coordinating deployment of such technologies at UCSD.
