UCI Professor Awarded Scanlan Medal
05.15.06 – Calit2 academic participant Masanobu Shinozuka, UCI Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been named the 2006 recipient of the Robert H. Scanlan Medal. The Engineering Mechanics Division of the American Society of Civil Engineers awarded the honor for “pioneering contributions to the advancement of the understanding and societal impact of mechanics.”

The prestigious Scanlan Medal is awarded in recognition of distinguished achievement in engineering mechanics. It is based on scholarly contributions to theory and practice in the areas of structural mechanics, wind engineering and aerodynamics.
Shinozuka, whose areas of interest include structural dynamics, earthquake and wind engineering, water, electrical and transportation networks, and remote sensing for disaster assessment, is an honorary member of ASCE. He is also a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
He is the recipient of numerous engineering awards, including the Kapitsa Medal of Honor, for noteworthy contributions to the filed of earthquake engineering; the Theodore von Karman Medal in civil engineering; the Wessex Institute of Technology Medal; and the C. Martin Duke Award, for contributions in earthquake engineering.
