Guidelines + Expectations

High School Summer Scholars work with a community of researchers and academic participants at the Qualcomm Institute, the UCSD division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). This is a special group of people who recognize the value of collaboration, openness to new ideas and a willingness to ensure the success of the institute as a whole. A completed Summer Scholar Research Agreement is a requirement for all research scholars who have been accepted into the Summer Scholar Program. They must review the guidelines and expectations carefully, and questions should be emailed to the program coordinator at summerprogram@calit2.net.

The Qualcomm Institute’s High School Summer Scholars must consent to adhere to the following guidelines and expectations:

• As part of the broader Qualcomm Institute research community, institute leadership may reference your participation in presentations to Qualcomm Institute partners and sponsors with due acknowledgment;
• Summer scholars are asked to acknowledge the Qualcomm Institute in any publications (conference papers, journal articles, or publicity releases) relating to Qualcomm Institute funded projects;
• It is hoped that all summer scholars will familiarize themselves with Calit2’s overall mission in order to refer to Qualcomm Institute when appropriate in related meetings and presentations (see information in the About section of this website, or www.calit2.net).

All High School Summer Scholars must also commit to attend the dates of the high school internship in 2014 – July 1 through August 31 – with additional attendance on September TBD for the Final Poster Session. They must also commit to:

1. Recognizing that, as a summer scholar, they must be willing to make a time commitment that will result in limited scheduled time off.
2. Strictly upholding the UCSD Principles of Community
3. Engaging seriously in the program and seeking to make a contribution that furthers the goal of building community among the faculty, staff, and fellow undergraduate and high school summer scholars.
4. Understanding that they shall receive a Certificate of Accomplishment upon successful completion of the program.
5. Agreeing that during the summer, they are expected to participate in all seminars and research presentations and that they shall inform the Program Coordinator in advance of any absence.
6. Understanding that missing more than two of the mandatory seminars and presentations shall invoke review of their status as a summer scholar by the student programs committee, and that the issuance of stipend payment is contingent upon the committee’s decision.
7. Understanding that they must abide by and follow rules, regulations, and protocols established by the University, faculty advisor and other staff or supervising graduate or undergraduate students.
8. Recognizing that in their interactions with students, parents of students, University employees, and representatives of other organizations, high school summer scholars are expected to conduct themselves as professional employees of UC San Diego.
