Calit@UCI Provides Valuable TIPS for Business Startups

By Anna Lynn Spitzer

09.07.07 -- If you are a researcher interested in moving your work from the lab into the marketplace, we have some TIPS for you. Calit2@UCI this week introduced its TIPS (Taking IP to Startup) program to guide researchers on the path to market profitability through technology transfer.

from EECS about his business idea.
The program has two valuable contributors to help would-be business owners – OCTANe’s LaunchPad and UCI’s Office of Technology Alliances.

On the first and third Tuesday of every month, Demetri Andrikos or Doug Crawford from the Office of Technology Alliances (OTA) will set up shop at Calit2 to support inventors who want to learn the finer points of navigating the office’s procedures.

Andrikos, director/engineering and physical sciences, or Crawford, senior licensing officer, will be available 1-4 p.m. in room 4106 in the Calit2 Building to answer questions about managing intellectual assets. Faculty and students are invited to stop by to learn more about intellectual property protection (patents, copyrights and trademarks), conflict of interest, licensing, company startups and more.

Every Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m., Luis Vasquez, LaunchPad director from OCTANe, an Orange County group that fuels the development of innovation in Orange County and Southern California, will hold office hours in the same location. He will meet with those who would like to commercialize their research but don’t know how to begin.

The OCTANe LaunchPad program is designed to quickly identify, support and accelerate information technology and biomedical technology business growth in Orange County and the surrounding region. The program evaluates the business potential of good ideas and technology, then connects the researcher with qualified people and financial resources. These resources work with individual LaunchPad companies to help develop and/or refine the business model and provide specific expertise in legal, technical, sales or other areas.

No appointment is necessary for either service.
