Calit2 Undergrad Fellows Present Research Results

9.25.02 -- Twenty Calit² undergraduate fellows presented the results of their summer's research activities in a final poster session on Monday this week. They were asked to do two things: present a scholarly poster or laptop-based demonstration, and present one PoerPoint slide summarizing the results of their research and fellowship experience more generally.

For their PowerPoint presentations, they were presented with a communications challenge: They had just three minutes to present the context for their work, explain the nature of their project and the conclusions they reached, and speculate where this work might take them in the future.

The previous fellows event gave several of them an opportunity to practice these presentations -- on camera (they received the videotapes for subsequent review) -- and they were then critiqued by Calit² communications staff and their fellow students.

This poster event marked the end of their fellowships. Other events during the summer introduced the institute and explained the "layer" concept to help them understand where they "fit"; provided technical overviews to some of the layers; and discussed oral and written communication skills, and appropriate ways to interact with the media.
