Abstract:
Progress in stem cell research has been slowed by the impact of ethical controversies surrounding stem cell derivation on federal funding. While President Bush announced clearly defined eligibility criteria for stem cell derivation on August 9, 2001, identification of potent and eligible stem cell lines for the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry and management of intellectual property and licensing agreement issues delayed award of funding to researchers. As Deputy Director for Extramural Research, Dr. Baldwin guides the NIH policies for stem cell research, and this event affords the opportunity to hear about and discuss the most current information of NIH stem cell research opportunities and funding.
