Qualcomm Institute Partners with ArtPower for New Filmatic Series Performance
San Diego, August 2, 2016 — This season, the Filmatic Festival has expanded into the Filmatic Series, and like with past Festivals, the Qualcomm Institute will host some of the events in the series organized by ArtPower’s film group led by curator Rebecca Webb. The first season of the series will feature a trio of innovative live cinematic events created by visionary artists who transform traditional film-going into active and immersive experiences.
The series will kick off on Wednesday, November 9 with “Sam Green and Brent Green: Live Cinema,” which will take place in the QI Auditorium on the ground floor of Atkinson Hall. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green (for the documentary The Weather Underground) and filmmaker-animator Brent Green are not related. Both, however, are known for their boundary-busting performances combining cinema, live musical accompaniment, and live narration. The UC San Diego event follows performances of “Live Cinema” at a film festival in Toronto and at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. San Diego film-goers will get to see the collaboration before “Live Cinema” has its New York premiere December 7-10 during the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklynn Academy of Music (BAM).
Billed by organizers as a joint program of short, live cinema pieces, the performance features the artists taking turns narrating their respective short films. Brent Green will tell stories about his family, growing up in rural Pennsylvania, and about the woman who sewed a spacesuit for the first dog sent into space, against the backdrop of “flickering stop-motion forays into Southern Gothic.” Engrossing documentaries about provincial dreamers and doers will accompany Sam Green as he shares tales about Louis Armstrong, the fog in San Francisco, and the last person listed in the San Francisco phone book (a certain ‘Zachary ZZZZZZZZZZra’). Sam Green’s recent credits include The Measure of All Things and The Love Song of R. Buckminster Fuller, a live cinematic collaboration with the indie rock band Yo La Tengo.
This rare, collaborative “Live Cinema” performance features live Foley and soundtracks by musicians Brendan Canty (Fugazi), James Canty (Nation of Ulysses), Becky Foon (Thee Silver Mt. Zion), and Kaye Ryan, as accompaniment to these short cinematic gems.

Lula del Ray employs overhead projectors, shadow puppets, actors in silhouette, and live music to tell the story of a lonely adolescent girl who lives with her mother on the outskirts of a vast satellite array in the middle of the desert. Inspired by the music of Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline, Lula del Ray is a mythic reinvention of the classic coming-of-age story. Uniquely, the piece begins with an optional Valentine’s Day Dinner at The Loft (also in the Price Center) starting at 6:30pm before the full performance at 8pm in the East Ballroom. Audience members are invited on stage post-performance to interact with the artists.

Miwa Matreyek Double Feature

Miwa Matreyek’s performances have thrilled audiences at major festivals and theaters around the world. They create a metaphor-laden fantasy world that is always grounded in reality with Matreyek’s own presence. The World Made Itself is a visual and musical journey through the history of the universe, from its beginning to the ever complex world of humans. In Myth and Infrastructure the artist’s shadow is constantly present as the world around her shifts and transforms, integrating her body into her own fantastical imagination, in which she traverses oceans, cityscapes, and domestic spaces to conjure dreamlike scenes. The performance features original music by Flying Lotus, Careful, Anna Oxygen, Caroline, and Mileece. The performance will be followed by an ArtTalk with the artist.
