Calit2 Fellows

Graduate OrientationMore than 40 students were introduced to Calit² and each other at an orientation meeting for the first graduate student fellows program. Director Larry Smarr provided a short history on the CISI program and the early days of Calit² as well as an overview to the "layer" conceptual framework of the institute. UCSD Division Director Ramesh Rao acquainted the students with his role and the companies providing funding for their fellowships, which include Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC), EricssonIntersilQualcomm, and Teraburst Networks.

AMCC is a premier supplier of high-bandwidth, silicon-empowering, intelligent optical networks. Ericsson supplies operators and service providers around the world with end-to-end solutions in mobile and broadband Internet, including network infrastructure, access equipment and terminals, application enablers, and global services to support business and private communications. Intersil develops very fast networking solutions that provide wireless access to video, data and voice in homes, offices, and public places. Qualcomm is the company that pioneered Code Division Multiple Access technology, which is now used in wireless networks and handsets all over the world. Teraburst Networks develops, manufactures, and delivers scalable switching and transmission solutions for next-generation optical networks.

Miller Puckette, Associate Director of the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts, where the event was held, described the role of CRCA in Calit² with respect to the New Media Arts layer. Then the layer leaders introduced the students by layer, each of whom said a few words about his/her department, advisor, and research area of interest. The meeting concluded with a charge to the students to seek out other fellows of interest working in other relevant disciplines to ensure their activities remain true to the Calit² mantra: interdisciplinary collaboration.
