The Association for Computing Machinery’s (ACM) Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (SIGKDD) today announced that the City of San Diego has been selected as the venue for its KDD 2020 conference. For over 20 years, KDD has served as one of the premier global meetings on artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science.

The annual conference, which brings together several thousand leading researchers and practitioners from academia and industry, is expected to be held in August 2020 in downtown San Diego.

Rajesh Gupta, associate director of the Qualcomm Institute and director of the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute at UC San Diego, and Yan Liu, director of the USC Machine Learning Center, will serve as general co-chairs for the meeting.

"As a volunteer organization, ACM SIGKDD has done extraordinary well in creating a strong technical forum that meaningfully engages the industry and academic professionals driving the ongoing data revolution,” said Gupta, a professor of computer science and engineering at the Jacobs School of Engineering. “We look forward to showcasing the emerging ecosystem of data science companies and professionals to this community in America's Finest City.”

San Diego hosted the KDD conference in 2011 and 1999.  “As artificial intelligence and machine learning fuel innovation across almost all industries and smarter, data-driven decisions become core elements of enterprise applications, we are excited for KDD to return to San Diego in 2020“ said Michael Zeller, Executive Committee member of SIGKDD and SVP AI Strategy & Innovation for Software AG. “KDD’s unique blend of academic research and applied data science perfectly complements San Diego’s excellence in advanced analytics.”

Kevin Carroll, Executive Director at Tech San Diego, added: “With a combination of world class universities and a vibrant data science cluster, San Diego is an ideal choice to host the annual KDD 2020 conference. The region looks forward to welcoming data scientists from across the globe.” Tech San Diego represents the region’s technology community, fostering growth and business acceleration through collaborations between industry, education, and government.

This year’s KDD 2018 Conference will take place in London in late August. Further information on San Diego’s KDD 2020 Conference will be made available later this year.
