QI Kicks off its Distinguished Speakers in Communication Theory and Systems Seminar Series

On Oct. 1, the first of a plethora of distinguished speakers will arrive at Qualcomm Institute (QI) to commence the launch of the first seminar series on communication theory and systems. This speaker series is a collaboration between QI and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department to bring eminent speakers from industry to present developments in the field of communications, storage and networking.

“We hope to grow QI Seminar Series as a space where industry meets academia, an extension of QI’s vision of interdisciplinary collaboration,” program administrator Joyce Hwang said.

Distinguished speakers from the industry will come to QI in a collaboration between QI and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department as a space where industry meets academica.

The series will give students, startups and working professionals in electrical and computer engineering access to speakers who are extremely successful and well-known in their industry roles.

“Students should have a better understanding of where the industry is going and help them with their career development,” professor and coordinator of the course Nambi Seshadri said. “As the speakers will get to spend some time during their visit here to interact with students and faculty, I am hoping that these interactions will foster some new industry-QI collaborations as well as strengthen some existing ones.”

The first talk of the series, Reliable Networking @ Cloud Scale, will be on Oct. 1 by Natalia Varava, Partner Group Software Engineering Manager from Microsoft Azure. 

The Distinguished Speakers in Communication Theory and Systems seminar series is part of a larger education program QI is launching in Fall Quarter 2018. The new program includes a series of big data day camps where participants will learn how to use data to make wise, actionable business and research decisions. Several workshops to teach participants how to solve Machine / Deep Learning problems using the tools available in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud are also planned.
