3.16.04 - Activities in the UCSD Division of Calit² continue to grow as new projects come online and we get closer to occupying the building (projected for January 2005). So the staffing structure needs to evolve to serve these growing needs, as described below.

Greg Hidley, after many years of service as head of the Office of Engineering Computing at UCSD, is transitioning full-time to Calit² as the UCSD Division's Chief Infrastructure Officer. In his new role, Greg will bring his intellectual force to the technology infrastructure aspects of the Calit² research and deployment programs both in-building and more generally.

Maryam Attari became our new Fiscal Affairs Manager in December. Maryam has worked on campus for a number of years in the ECE department and the Medical School, two units on campus with which we have the strongest engagements. Working with DeAndra Green and Karen Bloxham, Maryam has consolidated the UCSD Division's fiscal affairs functions, including budgeting, forecasting, and contracts and grants management in our new business office.

Tim Beach has joined us as Facilities Manager after many years working with the campus Physical Plant Services. He is working as our liaison to the architects, builders, suppliers, and contractors and will manage the physical infrastructure of the building and other Calit² facilities on campus.

Kate Tull is assuming responsibility as Manager of the Administrative, Special Projects, and Academic Services Office. Kate plugged many gaps and played many roles during the early foggy years of our existence. Her responsibilities now include management of resource planning and allocation (including space), academic personnel and student programs, project planning and support, liaison with the campus community, and supervision of support staff, including Helena Bristow, Project Support Coordinator, and Megan Miller, my Executive Assistant.

Kate and Tim will be working together to administer and facilitate our engagement with the campus community on the use and reuse of our unique building and its capabilities.

Steve Ross, Assistant Dean for Financial Administration of the Jacobs School of Engineering, will continue to function as our administrative guru, guardian angel, and overall troubleshooter. We also will continue to rely on his human resources staff.
