June 17, 2004 -- A visit to the new Calit² building at UC Irvine shows that while there is still a lot of activity, the building is indeed nearing completion. Recently, Irvine division director, Albert Yee, gave Institute director Larry Smarr a tour of the facility, pointing out the construction progress and discussing future steps. The two were joined by David McKay of PCL, Eugene Bugescu of UCI's construction office, and Lorrie Minkel and Stuart Ross of Calit².
The UCI building is nearing completion of the physical assembly process - most of the wallboard is in place, windows installed, the roof is sealed, the clean room walls and doors are in place, and most of the exterior trim is finished. There's still work to do, of course - vinyl flooring, fume hoods, and landscaping, for example - but even so the most visible assembly steps will be done by late July or August. The next phase, such as checking circuits, balancing air flows, certifying the clean room and letting the new carpet ventilate, won't look as busy but it will take time. Full project completion is expected in October.
