SGI Alerts Faculty and Researchers to Pentagon Research Funding Opportunity with Aug. 26 Deadline
August 13, 2004 -- One of Calit²'s long-standing industry partners, SGI (formerly Silicon Graphics), is encouraging faculty at UCSD, UC Irvine and other universities to submit proposals for projects to the Pentagon's Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP). Many of SGI's customers in the academic sector have received past federal funding from DURIP to acquire SGI® equipment, and the company noted in an advisory this week that the deadline for the next round of proposals is August 26. Final awards are scheduled to be announced in February 2005.

DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of United States higher education institutions to conduct research and educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for acquisition of research equipment.

A central purpose of DURIP is to provide equipment to enhance research-related education. Proposals must address the impact of the equipment on the institution's ability to educate students, through research, in disciplines important to Department of Defense missions. This announcement seeks proposals to purchase instrumentation in support of research areas of interest to the DoD, including areas of research supported by the administering agencies.
