San Diego Supercomputer Center Deploys Blue Titan Web Services

11.4.2002 -- Blue Titan Software Inc., the leading provider of origin-to-edge Web services networking solutions, today announced its Blue Titan Network Director solution has been deployed at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego, and is successfully managing the center's Web services infrastructure.

SDSC deployed Network Director to effectively control and manage its Web services infrastructure in response to increased usage of Web services by SDSC and other educational and government organizations operating on its network. Network Director provides SDSC control over the security, quality of service and performance management of its widespread Web services deployments.

SDSC develops and implements high-performance computing methods, including Web services, to advance science and technology. SDSC enjoys a long history as one of the world's foremost centers on computer technology and was one of five supercomputer centers chosen in 1986 to provide high-computing power to the National Science Foundation's NSFNET, a precursor to today's Internet.

By deploying the Network Director, SDSC is now able to unite multiple government agencies, and access vital information traditionally confined to proprietary data-storage silos. Currently, Network director is coordinating Web services interactions between SDSC, various departments at UCSD, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and other government and educational organizations.

"Prior to deploying Network Director, issues with management and control kept us from realizing the full power of Web services," said Chaitan Baru, co-director of SDSC's Data and Knowledge System (DAKS) program. "The introduction of Blue Titan's Web services networking fabric into our data and knowledge systems unlocked this potential, and greatly accelerated the collection and dissemination of information crucial to supporting real-time mission-critical applications."

By using Network Director in SDSC's Information Integration Testbed (I2T) project, the organization is now able to access and integrate information across multiple sources, including an EPA Web site containing information on toxic locations.

"Providing an advanced solution to an organization such as SDSC, an international leader in high-end computing and data management, is testament to the growing acceptance of Web services networking," said Frank Martinez, CTO, chairman and founder of Blue Titan Software. Network Director's success in networking SDSC's distributed, loosely coupled applications proves Web services networking solutions offer organizations a level of control over Web services to advance their strategic adoption."

Blue Titan Network Director is a comprehensive solution enabling enterprises to deploy, manage and optimize origin-to-edge Web services networks inside existing IT environments. Network Director creates a virtualization layer between applications that consume Web services and the systems and data that are exposed as Web services. This layer adds the provisioning, security, access control, queuing, performance measurement and visibility necessary to support business critical communication between applications.

About the San Diego Supercomputer Center
The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), an organized research unit of UC San Diego, develops and uses high-performance computing to advance science and technology. SDSC is an international leader in computing, data management, networking, biosciences, and other areas. SDSC is home to the Southern California Next Generation Internet (CalNGI) Application Center, which fosters the development, testing, incubation and demonstration of new business and applications such as the Blue Titan project for advanced networks. With funding from the State of California, CalNGI was set up by CommerceNet through a partnership with the California TTCI-DSTI and the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC).
