QI to Fuel Interactions with Art, Science and Technology in New Multimedia Art Exhibit

Researchers, artists and technologists from the Qualcomm Institute (QI) will pair up with local artists to illuminate the merging of science, technology and the arts in the newest exhibit of the San Diego Art Institute (SDAI).

"Illumination: 21st Century Interactions with Art + Science + Technology," will open with a reception on Feb. 8. The exhibit will be on display through May 3, 2020. 

“Art and technology share an objective of pushing boundaries, testing what is possible and changing people’s perspectives. Both can inspire wonder and amazement and have a lasting impact on the world,” said Qualcomm Institute Director Ramesh Rao. “At QI, we recognize that science and art aren’t mutually exclusive. In fact, they are constant collaborators.”

For the exhibit, local artists partnered with scientists from QI and other institutions to contribute to a collection of more than 30 original artworks. The pieces combine art, science and technology to boost public understanding of climate change, sustainability and other contemporary issues and explore solutions, both real and imagined.

QI participants include:

• QI Sonic researcher and UC San Diego PhD candidate in music John Burnett
• QI gallery@calit2 Director Trish Stone 
• QI technologist Shadi Dayeh (paired with artist Justin Manor)
• QI technologist Vikash Gilja (paired with artist Tim Murdoch)

“We are excited to see QI’s capabilities and collaborative spaces—specifically the Sonic Arts Lab, gallery@calit2 and the Prototyping Lab—represented at Illumination,” said Rao.

Rao notes that for two decades, QI has brought together faculty, artists, researchers and students to explore the intersections of art, science and technology for the benefit of society and the planet.

“Our partnership with SDAI reflects our belief in the immeasurable value of connecting San Diego’s thriving community of student and working artists with scientists, engineers, musicians and technologists to create a vision of the future,” he said.
