3.28.05 - UC Irvine Chancellor Ralph J. Cicerone will receive the Orange County Council of the AeA’s 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award – a tribute to be presented April 20 during the organization’s Twelfth Annual High Tech Awards ceremony.

Chancellor Ralph J. Cicerone

The award honors individuals whose outstanding leadership and lifetime contributions to science and technology have earned special recognition by the AeA – the nation’s largest high-tech trade association, representing more than 3,000 companies, ranging from software and Internet technology to telecommunications systems and services. The Orange County Council is one of 18 AeA councils established nationwide.

“We are delighted to honor Chancellor Cicerone for his outstanding accomplishments as an engineer, scientist, educator and leader of a rapidly growing and highly ranked university – UC Irvine,” said Phil Beaudoin, executive director the AeA Orange County Council. “Indeed, these achievements are so outstanding, they have culminated in Chancellor Cicerone being elected the 21st president of the National Academy of Sciences.”

Cicerone will resign as UCI chancellor at the end of June and assume the NAS presidency in Washington, D.C., July 1. Since Cicerone became UCI’s fourth chancellor in 1998, the university has undergone enormous growth and change while building an international reputation in fields as diverse as Earth system science, stem cell research, criminology, digital art and writing. Prior to serving as chancellor, Cicerone founded the university’s Department of Earth System Science, then served as dean of the School of Physical Sciences, where he recruited outstanding faculty and strengthened the curriculum and outreach programs. He also is a professor of chemistry and the Daniel G. Aldrich, Jr. Chair in Earth System Science.

The award will be presented by Henry Samueli, co-founder, chairman and chief technical officer of Irvine-based Broadcom Corp., a leading provider of semiconductors that enable the digital transmission of voice, data and video content for home and business applications. Samueli serves on the Board of Trustees of The UCI Foundation and as a board member of the UCI engineering school’s Advisory Board and the UCI Chief Executive Roundtable. Samueli also is an adjunct professor in electrical engineering and computer science. In 1999, the engineering school was named The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, and in 2000 he was honored with the UC Presidential Medal – the highest systemwide honor the University of California can bestow.

The Orange County Council has honored only two other individuals with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Previous recipients are Ted Smith, founder and former chairman of FileNet Corp., and Charles D. Martin, founder of Enterprise Partners and co-founder of Westar Capital.
